White-tailed fawns are born with rows of white spots on reddish-brown fur that mimic the dappled sunlight on a forest floor, making them nearly invisible to predators. For the first weeks of life, they lie perfectly still while their mother forages nearby, relying entirely on camouflage for protection. The spots fade as the fawn grows, disappearing completely by the first winter.
