Tennessee Walking Horses were originally called "Plantation Walkers" because Southern plantation owners rode them all day while inspecting their fields, thanks to the breed's incredibly smooth gait. Their signature "running walk" is a natural four-beat gait that's inherited, not trained — the horse glides forward while the rider barely moves in the saddle. The breed traces to a single foundation sire named Black Allan, born in 1886 in Tennessee.
